The world of mobile devices and their management within the enterprise is becoming ever more complex. Using Constellation Research’s own usage of these devices as a basis, we demonstrate that IT trying to ignore the issues that mobile devices raise will fail for three reasons:
The adoption of smartphones and tablets continues apace.
The prior dominance of RIM with its Blackberries is diminishing, and its Playbook tablet is going nowhere.
Purchasing occurs outside the traditional (at least for PCs) enterprise as users adopt BYOD (Bring or Buy Your Own Device).
This Quark finishes by discussing immediate modest actions that IT should take, not in order to stifle smartphone and tablet use but to exploit it in ways that keep the enterprise’s resources secure yet usable.
